THE RELUCTANT FARMER

“Oh stony grey soil of Monaghan,

you burgled my bank of youth”

Patrick Kavanagh, 1936

Patrick Kavanagh may have ended up a renowned poet, but he started life as a reluctant farmer. Torn between the scenery he loved and the hard work of farm life, it’s hard not to be inspired by his desire to chase after his true calling.

He’s a national treasure now, but to us he’ll always be the grumpy gasán who lived next door to Granny McGahon.

Sláinte!
