IRISH MUNRO Series #5: The Black Road Campfire Porter
Celebrating Ireland’s highest mountains, Irish Munros are peaks over 3,000 ft. Many of these peaks belong to the MacGillycuddy Reeks in Kerry, one is in Wicklow, and there’s one which towers over our Mitchelstown brewery, our beloved Galtymore. Since we started Eight Degrees, we’ve taken inspiration from the surrounding landscape, constantly innovating to brew adventurous beers using natural ingredients. IRISH MUNRO Series #4: The Black Road
Our beloved Galtymore holds a special place in our heart at Eight Degrees. The Galtees are Ireland’s highest inland mountain range, straddling the Cork, Tipperary and Limerick borders. These mountains are also key to us producing world class beers, producing wonderfully soft water via its red sandstone ridges.
The Black Road is the hillwalker route up Galtybeg and onto the higher Galtymore for magical views across the countryside. Inspired by the mountains, we’ve brewed a porter using Belgian and German malts that impart beech- and oak-smoked flavours along with coffee notes.
Dark, smooth and complex, this is the beer that we want to drink while camping beside enchanted Lough Curra below Galtymore on a chilly evening: a just reward for an afternoon’s scramble up this glorious mountain.
Style: Campfire porter
Malt: Irish pale ale malt, beech smoked malt, oak smoked wheat, café malt, CaraAroma, chocolate malt.
Hops: A light bittering of Nugget.
Colour/appearance: a rich mahogany brown in the glass, topped with a sturdy tan head.
Aroma: sweet liquorice, muscovado sugar, light smoke.
Flavour: gentle woodsmoke coming through on the palate with sweet caramel undertones. Malty, complex and balanced.
Aftertaste: bitterness coming through at the end, with a final singe of smoke.
This smooth sipper is eminently suited to campfire foods: bonfire bangers, or sausages, cooked on sticks over a woodfire, potatoes slow roasted in the embers and bubbling pots of homemade baked beans with lots of smoked paprika. It’s also ace with sweet things. Staying outdoors, pair it with s’mores or bake a slab of sticky molasses and ginger parkin for a heavenly pairing of smoke and spice.
