Drinkers in Exeter can enjoy 55p off pints of locally brewed beers today and tomorrow (Saturday) as Exeter Brewery joins a nationwide campaign calling for a cut in the tax on beer sold in pubs.

The independent brewery is reducing the price of all its cask and keg beers at both its Brewery Tap Room on Cowley Bridge and from noon at The Hour Glass Inn, Melbourne Street, as part of Drop the Pint Day. This sees pubs and breweries across the country temporarily lowering prices to demonstrate the difference a reduction in beer duty could make.
While the national campaign takes place today, Exeter Brewery is extending the offer at The Hour Glass Inn into tomorrow.
The initiative comes ahead of the forthcoming Budget and highlights the difference between beer duty in Britain and Germany, where the headline duty on a pint is around 5p compared with approximately 55p in the UK. Around 65 pubs, bars, and taprooms across the country are taking part.
“We thought the best way to demonstrate what a difference lower beer duty could make was to actually knock 55p off the price of a pint,” said Alan Collyer, managing director of Exeter Brewery. “People are understandably concerned about the cost of going out for a drink, and pubs and breweries are facing plenty of pressures of their own.
“This is a simple way of making the point that reducing the tax on beer sold in pubs could make a real difference to customers and the businesses serving them. We’re extending the offer at The Hour Glass Inn into Saturday as well, so there’s an extra opportunity for people to enjoy a pint at the reduced price.”
