IRISH MUNRO Series #3: The Pilgrim’s Path Italian Pils

LIMITED EDITION MIXED CASE - IRISH MUNRO Series: 4 x 6 of #3, #4, #5, #6 (24x440ml)

Celebrating Ireland’s highest mountains, Irish Munros are peaks over 3,000 ft. Many of these peaks belong to the MacGillycuddy Reeks in Kerry, one is in Wicklow, and there’s one which towers over our Mitchelstown brewery, our beloved Galtymore. Since we started Eight Degrees, we’ve taken inspiration from the surrounding landscape, constantly innovating to brew adventurous beers using natural ingredients. The Irish Munro Series: continuing our Naturally Adventurous journey.

IRISH MUNRO Series #3: The Pilgrim’s Path Italian Pils

Mount Brandon – 3122 ft

The Pilgrim’s Path takes the faithful to the summit of Mount Brandon on the picturesque Dingle Peninsula. This mountain is named after St Brendan the Navigator, one of the early Irish monastic saints in the sixth century. Brendan was a travelling monk who sailed the seas to preach the gospel – and he may just have been the first European to discover America.

While the tradition of pilgrimage to Mount Brandon predates even St Brendan, the Christian church incorporated this pagan route into a medieval pilgrimage path. Mount Brandon joined holy sites like Santiago de Compostela in Spain and Rome in Italy, destinations where pilgrims walk to encounter God.

To celebrate these quests we have produced an Italian pilsner. We dry hopped it to the heavens with Loral, the Super Noble hop with distinctive floral, herbal and peppery notes, making this beer a delightful sipper to savour.

Style: Italian Pils

Malt: Irish lager malt.

Hops: dry hopped with ridiculous amounts of Loral.

ABV: 4.9%

IBUs: 32

Tasting notes

Colour/appearance: straw lemon yellow with a white head.

Aroma: sweet lemon marmalade, intense floral notes.

Flavour: this beer is a showcase for the glories of Super Noble hop Lorel, and is saturated with masses of lemon-citrus and floral flavours, plus a hint of spicy pepper. It’s soft and smooth, pithy and delicious with lingering bitterness.

Aftertaste: delightfully bitter citrus tastebud wake-up call.

Food pairings

This is a slow sipper that you want to savour with good food. The lemony notes will happily complement any spices that you have going on – pair it with buffalo cauliflower wings and watch your tastebuds fly. It’s happy to hang out with regular spicy chicken wings too, especially if there’s a blue cheese dressing in the mix. For a cheese pairing, go with a soft Irish farmhouse goat cheese like St Tola, Ardsallagh and Bluebell Falls. Fresh and creamy with a strong zesty aroma, they all offer a wonderful contrast to the beer flavour.

Availability: 440ml cans.

Launch Date: September 2020.
