Sharp’s Brewery has released its final limited-edition brew of 2024, a red IPA called Gulland Rock, which is now available in selected outlets.
The beer is a collaboration with close North Cornwall neighbours and friends The Mariners, in Rock, and Paul Ainsworth at No6, in Padstow, both part of the Paul Ainsworth collection.
The recipe has been developed by Sharp’s technical brewing optimisation manager, Jon Wide, with hospitality and retail manager, Sam Lyne. They worked alongside Michael Faraway and Liam Evans, of The Mariners, and Loren Cooper, of Paul Ainsworth at No6. It was created at the brewery’s dedicated small-scale pilot plant by Mike and Loren.
Gulland Rock (4.5% ABV) features five different malt types, offset with a large loading of new world hops, to create a strong aroma of stone fruit. Cherry purée has been added to the boil to drive less zesty aromas, which, in turn, contributes to the overall malty sweetness of the brew.
The beer has been named after the largest of three islands that sit off the Camel Estuary, between Stepper Point and Trevose, just down the road from the brewery in Rock. It is also a play on the brewery’s ruby red IPA, Wolf Rock, which the beer style has taken some inspiration from.
“We love inviting friends and neighbours to the brewery to have a look around, understand more about what we do here, and get stuck into the brewing process,” said Jon. “It’s always so much fun and informative for all involved.
“We were all really pleased with the end result. Gulland Rock will only be available for a limited time, but is well worth trying. It’s got a lovely fruity aroma and full, ripe, sweet taste, and with its deep red hue, it looks really great in the glass.”
Gulland Rock is available, while stocks last, at The Mariners in Rock, Paul Ainsworth at No6, The Blisland Inn, The Front in Falmouth, and the Brendon Arms in Bude. It is also available in mini-casks from Sharp’s Brewing Co’s shop and online.
