Putty in your hands, from this week

It’s Putty time, the week in the year when craft beer lovers go crazy for a Cornish double IPA they have been anticipating keenly!

Verdant Putty

The brewers in question are Verdant, who created Putty (8.2% ABV) for Northern Monk’s inaugural Hop City festival, back in 2017.

The recipe features a malt base of Golden Promise, a higher-than-normal proportion of wheat malt, along with generous amounts of oats and flaked wheat to craft a well-rounded flavour. The water profile is delicately soft, and the brewers add substantial whirlpool additions of Galaxy, Mosaic, and Azacca hops. This is followed by an extensive dry hop, with equal parts Mosaic and Galaxy and slightly less Azacca.

“Every year, our brewers go the extra mile to create a DIPA that’s perfectly balanced yet bursting with flavour,” says Verdant. “This year’s brew is no different. Expect juicy notes of mango, passionfruit, and peach, complemented by subtle hints of resinous pine. It’s everything you love about Putty!

“We created Putty Day for our community to connect over shared values and foster a sense of belonging as they emerge for Putty launch week. This year, we’re celebrating individuality and self-expression, encouraging everyone to bring their true, authentic selves to Putty Day, on Friday, January 23rd, with a simple message: Be Weird.”

This year’s can art, animation, and branding, designed by Craig Boylan, embodies this message visually. His style evolved from experimenting with 3D versions of Bauhaus posters, which led to his Baumann character and a toy-like, minimal style. For this project, Craig kept his Baumann character at the forefront and explored the idea that being weird is both an internal and external trait. This inspired him to examine the Baumann character’s mind and imagine three different states: Contemplation, Projection, and the innermost state… Weird! Read more about Craig and his Putty work here.

On Friday, (23rd January) Putty will be pouring on tap and available in cans at more than 150 venues across the UK as part of a nationwide Verdant Tap takeover. There will also be some other beers for drinkers to try. See UK and international pouring venues on Google Maps.
