Good Pints, Good Produce, Good People: Partnering with Larder>East

In times of mounting economic and environmental uncertainty, our communities must lean into connection, sustainability, and mutual support more than ever. At Bullhouse Brew Co, these values have always been central—but our partnership this year with Larder>East, just around the corner from Bullhouse East, feels especially powerful in this moment.

Why Supporting Local Matters Now More Than Ever

1. Resilience in a Changing Climate

Local food systems strengthen community resilience. When global supply chains falter, our local networks—like Larder>East—remain a lifeline. They ensure access to fresh, nutritious food even amid disruption. Studies show these systems foster economic and social benefits by providing stable income for producers and deeper community connections.

2. Reducing Environmental Impact

Central to our climate challenges is transportation. On average, conventional produce journeys hundreds or even over a thousand miles, using fuel inefficiently. Urban and local agriculture, by contrast, dramatically cuts emissions—research indicates that local distribution systems can use 5–17 times less fuel. That’s not just savings in fuel—it’s a meaningful reduction in greenhouse emissions.

3. Investing in Local Economies

Every pound we spend locally gets reinvested in East Belfast. Food hubs like Larder>East support regional farmers and growers, help keep local businesses afloat, and retain economic value within the community. Meanwhile, vibrant local markets and hubs reinforce social bonds and pride of place.

Larder>East isn’t just a place to shop—it’s what economists call a “community-capital multiplier,” nurturing social, economic, and human capital to strengthen all of us.

The Larder>East Ethos: Dignity, Diversity, and Local Nourishment

Since launching in 2013 out of a faith community initiative, Larder>East has reimagined how food aid can work. Instead of traditional food banks, their membership-based model gives people the ability to choose and pay for high-quality, locally sourced produce at affordable prices. It’s food that matters, for people who matter.

Their two-pillar membership vision brings together individuals from all walks of life, encouraging interaction, understanding, and mutual respect—and that’s how we build inclusive communities.

Shared Values with Bullhouse Brew Co

As a Living Wage accredited licensed premises in Northern Ireland, since April 2023, Bullhouse East has stood for fair living standards and fair access. We believe that supporting each other—whether through wages, locally sourced food, or shared spaces—creates a stronger, more equitable society.

By partnering with Larder>East, we’re not just supporting a food hub—we’re investing in a shared future rooted in sustainability, dignity, and mutual care.

Our biggest community celebration of the year, Bullaplooza, brought the street to life once again with a weekend-long festival of beer, food, and music. While the weather threw us a few curveballs this year, the spirit of the event shone through.

Most importantly, we were able to give back directly: 10% of all ticket sales went straight to Larder>East. That means every pint poured, every bite enjoyed, and every ticket bought helped provide dignified access to good food for families in East Belfast.

Bullaplooza isn’t just about great craic—it’s about celebrating our community and making sure it thrives, even when the skies aren’t on our side.

Community in Action: How You Can Help

  • Monthly Quiz Nights: Join us on the last Tuesday of every month at Bullhouse East for quiz night. Bring your mates, sharpen your wits, enjoy a pint—and support Larder>East at the same time.

  • Taproom Donations: Feel moved? Drop a donation at the till during your next visit—every bit helps.

  • Visit & Learn More: Dive into the Larder>East story, explore their vision, and consider volunteering or supporting further by visiting their About Us page.

Together, we’re brewing more than just beer—we’re brewing stronger, healthier, more resilient roots for our community.

Bullhouse was initially founded back in 2016 to bring to market styles of beer not commonly available in Northern Ireland. To that end, the first beers we brewed were an Imperial Stout and a Comber Potato Saison.
