Choctaw Beer (“choc”) was a legendary beer across the American West, especially in Oklahoma where it became a cultural fixture.
It was such a well-know beer style that it’s even mentioned in the Clint Eastwood classic, The Outlaw Josey Wales.
Originally brewed by Choctaw Indians it was essentially a farmhouse beer, brewed with ingredients as diverse as snuff and poison berries. It seems to have had a unique brewing technique as well that involved steeping the grains and hops together in hot water.
We’ll be talking to Professor Steven Sewell about it on Thursday.
