ORIGINAL GRAVITY Hoppy Lager with Niamh McCarthy of Yellow Lion Studio

Eight Degrees - Original Gravity Hoppy Lager - BL

To celebrate ten years of brewing at Eight Degrees, we wanted to showcase Ireland-based artists in our 2021 Original Gravity series. We ran a competition looking for artworks that reflected our Naturally Adventurous values, expressing our desire to explore and roam again. The winners are featured on this series of five limited beer releases, giving emerging artists a can-sized exhibition space.

#2: ORIGINAL GRAVITY Hoppy Lager with Niamh McCarthy of Yellow Lion Studio

Autumn is in the air and we’ve gathered a bountiful blend of Noble and New World hops together for this fulsome harvest lager. We focused on a clean, pale lager base, combined with an intense hop aroma. It’s a beer packed with hoppy possibilities.

Artist: Niamh McCarthy: Yellow Lion Studio

This illustration represents the freedom that lies ahead of us, with opportunities and possibilities on the horizon. It’s all about the adventures we can have again, embracing Ireland, the beautiful scenery and nature we have on our doorsteps.

Style: Hoppy Lager

Malt: Irish lager malt, Carapils.

Hops: Lublin, Hallertau Tradition, dry hopped with Loral and Mandarina Bavaria.

ABV: ABV 5.7%

IBUs: 27

Tasting notes

Colour/appearance: light straw yellow, lots of fine bubbles due, our brewer tells me, to the beer being gespunded*.

Aroma: a solid noble hop base with lots of fresh citrus, lime blossom and lemon balm on the nose.

Flavour: clean and crisp and very guzzleable. Herbal flavours of mint leaf balanced with zippy lime citrus.

Aftertaste: lean, clean and delicously cool on the palate.

Food pairings

This Oktoberfest-style bier will go superbly with traditional Oktoberfest-style food: bring on great big würstl with plenty of mustard and sauerkraut, warm pretzels and that spiced cheese-butter spread called obatzda, a spit-roasted half chicken and roasted ham knuckles. A plate of spaetzle or semmelknödel and that’s you filled up until Christmas. At least you have this hoppy lager to cut through all that dense, rich food. If you have a chance – or can take any more food – try this beer with Dampfnudel, those sweet steamed dumplings, and see how the fresh citrus notes brighten up what could otherwise be a heavy dish.

Availability: 440ml cans, limited draught.

Launch Date: October 2021.

* gespunded – not that we’d go around making up words, but – in the brewery – this refers to the beer going through the process of spunding, which naturally carbonating the beer through pressurised fermentation.
