T&R Theakston is bringing an extension of its iconic Old Peculier brand to pubs, with the on-trade launch of Peculier IPA.

Theakston Peculier IPA

It was created by head brewer Mark Slater to meet the brief of brewing a beer which was worthy of the 200-year-old brewery’s ‘Peculier’ name.

It launched in retail in bottles in 2023, achieving listings in Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Co-Op and Booths. It was then named best strong pale ale/bitter at The Great Exhibition of Prize Ales last year.

Made with 100% British ingredients, the 5.1% ABV beer pays homage to the origins of Indian pale ales, bringing together the strength of alcohol with the antioxidant character of hops to robustly withstand lengthy voyages.

Peculier IPA is brewed using the finest British malted barley and three English-grown hops — Harlequin, Jester, and Olicana — delivering a zesty fruitiness with a full-bodied malty undertone, finishing with a hop-forward flourish.

“In our 200-year history, the Peculier brand has remained prized and protected, so it was no mean feat to create a beer worthy of this name,” said Richard Bradbury, managing director of T&R Theakston. “We truly believe this IPA has earned its right to be deemed Peculier and is testament to the skill of our expert brewing team.

“Whilst bringing something new to our range, we were also keen to capture the heritage of the IPA in a way which puts UK home-grown ingredients in the spotlight. The result is a pint of outstanding smoothness, flavour, and character, which is establishing a legendary status of its own, and we can’t wait to see it enjoyed in its ideal setting, the great British pub.”
