Moonwake have launched the latest beer in their Artist Series Honeyberry Sour, in a can designed by Sophy Louise Illustration, from Glasgow.
“It’s always been on my bucket list to design a beer can” said Sophy when approached to be part of the project. Moonwake worked with her to create a vision of what the end product would look and taste like.
She brought her flair for drawing bold characters and injected humour with their playful interactions with outsized honeyberries. The dynamic colour palette of deep purple and fuschia was inspired by the berries in the brew.
Moonwake will be launching Honeyberry Sour on Thursday (14th November) at Stereo, Glasgow. This will be the first opportunity to taste the tart, pink Honeyberry Sour. Concurrently there will be a gallery display from Sophy showing her wider portfolio.
The beer is a foray into a new fruit often described as a super blueberry. Honeyberries are relatively new to Scotland, but are already prized for their tart, zingy sweetness. The beer is brewed with the support of Scottish Honeyberry Growers.
Showcasing Scottish artists
The Moonwake Artist Series was launched at the beginning of 2024 as a way of showcasing amazing Scottish artists.
“It’s a great way to collaborate with local artists, and bring more colour and excitement into the production space,” said Moonwake head brewer Vinny Rosario.
“I was a little nervous how people would react, but have been blown away by the excitement and enthusiasm the artists have brought to the project. They have ended up being some of our most popular cans.”
It was important to Moonwake to make sure that all artists were compensated for their time. “We know that you can’t pay bills with exposure,” said Vinnie.
Artist Series #1, a Hibiscus Sour with Martha Duncan Studio, became one of the brewery’s fastest selling beers. Martha brought the project to life with a vibrant floral can referencing the petals of the Hibiscus flower.
Artist Series #2, a Trilogy Pale with Clarabunda Illustrations, celebrated Moonwake’s third anniversary, combining three of the brewer’s favourite hops from their first three years. The art took inspiration from The Shore, in Leith, where Moonwake is located
