Cumulus Lupulus Cloudy IPA

Cumulus Lupulus Cloudy IPA from Eight Degrees Brewing

We all know that Ireland is no stranger to clouds. That said, on the cloud spectrum (which runs from dreary to happy), it’s our friend the Cumulus that lets us know that we’ve got a sunny day, ripe for outdoor adventure and, perhaps, a barbecue. Cumulus are the puffy, fluffy heaps of cloud that we drew as kids, a signifier of fair weather – or of The Simpsons’ opening sequence.

This cloudy IPA was brewed with Irish pale ale malt, wheat and oats. It has a juicy hop aroma, rounded out with a dry hop addition of NZ’s Nelson Sauvin for an extra fruity gooseberry hit. We’ve got intense tropical fruit flavours here, a soft body and smooth mouthfeel: just what we need for those Cumulus days.

Style: Cloudy IPA
Malt: Irish pale ale malt, oats, wheat.
Hops: Loral, Citra, Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo.
ABV: 5.2%
IBUs: 27

Tasting notes
Colour/appearance: straw, gentle haze, persistent cloudy white head
Aroma: strong lime citrus up front on the nose with stone fruit arriving as the beer opens up in the glass.
Flavour: up front lime pith, some apricot sweet-bitterness at the midpoint with black pepper and herby tarragon following through.
Aftertaste: lean bitterness with a clean dry finish on the end.

Food pairings
I have three words for you: crab crème brulée. Specifically, we’re talking about Paul Flynn’s signature dish that you’ll find on the menu at The Tannery, his restaurant in Dungarvan. It’s well worth making at home so that you can see how the lime bitterness of this beer cuts through the crème to enhance the flavour of the crab, the pickled ginger playing nicely with the black pepper notes in Cumulus Lupulus CIPA. There’s enough flavour to make sure that a goat cheese like Carraig Bán from Dart Mountain in Derry doesn’t dominate while the bitter citrus flavour of the beer is a delicious contrast to the tangy earthyness of the cheese. Add a tomato salad with basil and pine nuts to complement the herbal notes. For a not-too-sweet ending, pair a glass of this CIPA with a burnt Basque cheesecake and cherry compote.

Availability: 440ml cans, limited draught.
Launch Date: September 2024.
