Galway Bay Brewery is Galway’s first and only Microbrewery. Since 2009 they have been producing excellent beer from session ales to barrel aged beers. I’m going to sample four from their standard range so let’s get started on the beer review!
Slow Lives
Style: Helles lager
Abv: 5%
First impressions
Head is medium sized but fades quickly. Just like a typical helles lager it is light in colour and slightly hazy with a punchy aroma.
How does it taste?
A very sessionable and tasty German style beer. Due to the addition of saaz hops the flavour has delicious earthy and slightly nutty notes to it. It is light, full of flavour and the hint of nutty aftertaste rounds it off nicely.
What’s the verdict?
Full Sail
Style: IPA
Abv: 5.8%
First impressions?
Head is medium and the colour is a hazy amber. The aroma is a burst of hops, with strong sweet citrus.
How does it taste?
Smooth carbonation gives it a silky mouthfeel. Big hop bill with this one. The use of colombus, el dorado and cascade hops give it a strong bitter hoppy and citrus taste.
What’s the verdict?
Althea
Style: Pale
Abv: 4.8%
First impressions?
Medium head with a cloudy light yellow colour. Very citrus aroma.
How does it taste?
It has a light carbonation leading it to be velvety but also slightly oily. It has a very thirsty quenching zingy citrus flavour which is derived from the citra, amarillo and simcoe hops. There is a citrus and slightly bitter aftertaste.
What’s the verdict?
Buried At Sea
Style: Milk stout
Abv: 4.5%
First impressions?
A medium to thick head and a dark black colour. The aroma is a subtle caramel.
How does it taste?
The carbonation is low and smooth leading to a silky and velvety mouthfeel. The flavour is delicious caramel but it’s not overwhelming. There is the perfect balance between bittering hops and stout malt and there is a beautiful smokey aftertaste.
